When it rains, it pours. The Boston Red Sox currently sit in last place in the AL East. They lost young phenom Roman Anthony after the fourth game of the month to a wrist injury that was supposed to keep him sidelined for just a few games. Now nearly 20 games later, he faces another setback.
Reigning Cy Young runner-up, Garrett Crochet, has now missed more than a month with right shoulder soreness. And team leader Trevor Story could be looking at surgery on a sports hernia that could put him in the clubhouse for most of the summer.
The player they brought to Boston from Worcester to replace Story, Nick Sogard, is now injured as well.
Interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters on Friday that Sogard would not be in the lineup against the Cleveland Guardians as he nurses a "nagging" injury.
"Nick Sogard has a 'nagging' right side issue," insider Tim Healey reported on X. That’s why he isn’t playing today. It bothers him in particular when he is hitting left-handed."
Sogard has been exceptional since being called up from Triple-A.
He made his debut on May 17 and played in ten games in 11 days. He registered a hit in eight of the ten games, was responsible for five runs and posted a .368 on-base percentage.
Sogard is listed as day-to-day, but the Red Sox have not had much luck with nagging injuries this season.
