Coco Jones Comforts Fiancé Donovan Mitchell After Cavaliers Swept by Knicks

Cleveland Cavaliers All-NBA and All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell began this season by praising the Grammy-winning artist Coco Jones, his fiancée since last summer, as “an amazing human being” who “brings me peace.”

Mitchell again cited Jones as his rock in his Andscape diary entry about the Cavaliers’ Game 7 win over the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference semifinals earlier this month.
He wrote, in part:
“She’s a big reason why I am where I am today in this situation where I’m playing the way I’m playing: When you have somebody that is home and just being around them, you feel like you’re at home. I think the world’s starting to see us in these moments a lot more now. But it was one of those moments where I was almost going to cry because she’s been there for me through the injuries, through the bad performances, the good performances when you do so well and still don’t get what you want, and when you do poorly, and you don’t get what you want. […] I love that girl to death, and it’s just one of those things where she’s just home.”
Mitchell is leaning on Jones even more now. Any feel-good built up in Cleveland by the Cavaliers reaching the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018 vaporized when they were humiliated by the New York Knicks once the series started.

The Knicks demolished the Cavaliers, 130-93, in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Monday night, completing the series sweep and advancing to their first NBA Finals since 1999. Mitchell scored a game-high 31 points in the loss.
The Cavaliers acquired Mitchell from the Utah Jazz in a blockbuster trade in September 2022. Cleveland had been in no man’s land after LeBron James left for Los Angeles in 2018, and Mitchell was expected to be the final piece to restore the Cavaliers to contender status.
On some level, Mitchell delivered. After missing the playoffs for four straight years, the Cavaliers have reached the playoffs in each of the past four years with Mitchell. While the NBA world clowns the Cavaliers for their season ending with a whimper, Mitchell believes it was a necessary step in earning championship mettle.
“I love it here,” Mitchell told reporters postgame. “I don’t know how else to say it. I’ve said it before I signed the other extension. I love it here, and I have no doubt this group can get there. […] We have unfinished business.”
