Even though the Edmonton Oilers ultimately fell in a shootout against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday evening at Prudential Center, captain Connor McDavid continued his truly otherworldly start to the season.

He not only continued his assist streak but also scored a filthy shootout goal, deking past Devils goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, whom the club acquired from the Winnipeg Jets in a blockbuster deal late last month.

The Oilers picked up five of a possible six points during their road swing, though fellow star forward Leon Draisaitl said they’d have preferred all six.

“I thought it was a good trip for us, but you obviously want to grab all six if you can,” Draisaitl said via NHL.com. “Shootout is a toss-up sometimes, but a good trip all in all for us and we’ll move on.”

McDavid, who picked up an assist during regulation, is now riding a 16-game assist streak that has surpassed the previous NHL mark of 13 games. He has 42 points (9 goals, 33 assists) during that span and became the first player in league history to reach 30 assists within his team’s first 15 games.

His 16-game point streak is the fifth of his career to reach that length, while his nine multi-assist games this season have pushed his career total to 231; his next one will tie him with Joe Sakic for 12th all-time in NHL history.

As if that weren’t enough, McDavid also became just the fourth player ever to reach 40 points in 16 games or fewer, joining Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky and Joe Malone.

So far this season, McDavid is on pace to score 47 goals with 163 assists.
