Misfortune, Not Miscues, Led to Flyers’ Loss vs. Wild
· Yahoo Sports
PHILADELPHIA – It was misfortune, not miscues, that led to the Philadelphia Flyers (4-9-4) 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild (11-3-3) on Tuesday at Xfinity Mobile Arena. The Flyers played hard, and well at that, but in the end, they lost to the better.
Matt Boldy, Michael McCarron, Joel Eriksson Ek, and Danila Yurov scored for the Wild. Tyson Foerster and Denver Barkey scored for the Flyers.

If you erase 30 seconds from the first period, it was actually a pretty even first 20 minutes. However, the score will tell you otherwise. Less than five minutes into the game, the Wild scored twice in the span of 31 seconds, giving them a commanding lead.
The first goal came from Matt Boldy, and yeah, it came from blown coverage. But when you have Boldy, Quinn Hughes, Kirill Kaprizov, and Joel Eriksson Ek dancing around the zone, it’s hard to contain. Hughes had an effortless setup, and Boldy did not miss. The second goal came off a flukey bounce off Porter Martone’s skate, but Michael McCarron was in the right place to bury the puck.
The rest of the period was pretty even. It was just a bad 31 seconds; that wasn’t even all that bad. Philly managed to fight back in the shot battle, going into the first intermission down 2-0, but only down 8-7 in shots.
Period No. 2 got off to an unfortunate start. Another tough break for the Flyers, as Jamie Drysdale’s attempt to clear the zone was stopped by an official, keeping it in play for the Wild, who scored soon after courtesy of Joel Eriksson Ek. It was misfortune, not miscues, that put Philly down 3-0 early in the 2nd period. Regardless, they weren’t getting any offense to help dig out of the hole.
The Flyers got on the board in the latter half of the period after a great play by Matvei Michkov to settle play down. He found Jamie Drysdale, who put the puck on the money, finding Tyson Foerster’s stick in the slot, who redirected it past Jesper Wallstedt to get the Flyers on the board.
Ideally, the Flyers would have tacked on another to have a good chance at fighting back. They had their chances, but could not convert. So, they went into the second intermission trailing 3-1, and being outshot by the Wild 18-14.
They found that ideal start in the third period, however, as a penalty drawn by Travis Konecny led to an early-period power play. Denver Barkey capitalized on the chance, bringing the Flyers within a goal with plenty of time to go.
Philly was putting the pressure on Minnesota, racking up shots while holding the Wild without one for the first 9 minutes of the period. The Wild picked up the pressure, but the Flyers were still playing well.
In the end, the Flyers played really well against the Wild, but ran out of time. Despite the comeback effort, they simply ran out of time. The Flyers pulled Dan Vladar, but could not score at 6-on-5. Danila Yurov scored on the empty net, sealing the 4-2 win for the Wild.

P1 4:37/15:23: In the blink of an eye, the Wild scored again. Michael McCarron sent the puck along the boards behind the net, finding Blake Coleman (3). Coleman’s pass out took a lucky bounce off of Porter Martone’s skate, going right to McCarron (3), who put the puck in the net. Bobby Brink (8) picked up the secondary assist. It was a chaos goal, but a goal nonetheless. 2-0 Wild.

P2 5:36/14:24: Matvei Michkov (3) did a good job settling the puck down and extending a Flyers possession as the Wild’s defense came in. He connected with Foerster (3), who redirected the puck past Jesper Wasllsted. 3-1 Wild.

Penalties
P1 5:18/14:42: Denver Barkey got called for hooking Danila Yurov, putting the Wild on the game’s first power play. It was a chance to bury the Flyers early, but Philly got the easy-ish kill.
P1 14:42/5:18: Travis Sanheim draws a hooking penalty against Matt Boldy, giving the Flyers their first power play of the game. The Flyers essentially killed their own power play with their inability to keep the puck in the zone. Porter Martone had the best look with half of the net empty, but he hit the post.
P2 0:42/9:18: Following the Wild goal, Flyers forward Trevor Zegras earned a 10-minute misconduct penalty. Jamie Drysdale hit an official with the puck while trying to clear the zone before the goal, and Zegras came in and looked to be arguing with the official afterward, earning the penalty. Play continued at 5-on-5.
P2 7:24/12:36: Nick Seeler was called for a rather weak cross-check on Danila Yurov, putting the Wild back on the power play. The Flyers killed off that penalty with relative ease, but…..
P2 9:42/10:18: Nick Seeler found himself right back in the penalty box after an even weaker holding penalty, this one drawn by, you guessed it, Danila Yurov. Fortunately for the Flyers, they were able to keep the Wild power play off the board.
P3 0:50.19:10: Travis Konecny draws a holding penalty on Jonas Brodin in the early stage of the third period, giving the Flyers a power play with a chance to make the game interesting. That they did.
P3 3:27/16:33: The Flyers drew another power-play chance after Joel Eriksson Ek was called for a cross-check on Nick Seeler. They were unable to score another goal, but the power play showed plenty of life.
