The 2026 CFB season was always going to be about Notre Dame VS Miami
· Yahoo Sports
I’m almost completely certain Notre Dame will drop from No. 5 in the AP Top 25 this week to No.7 when the rankings are released Sunday afternoon. I’m also certain that Notre Dame will be No. 7 or No. 8 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings.

And that’s fine, and it likely doesn’t matter much.
I just watched Miami escape with a win for the second week in a row (with some help from the officials) but they WILL be No. 1 when they come up to South Bend next weekend with ESPN’s College Gameday in attendance. Despite Notre Dame’s one loss this season, the game in South Bend is going to be a monster. Some might argue that a No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 2 Miami facing off would be a whole lot bigger (which is what it would be had the Irish pulled off a win against BYU) but that’s just window dressing.
An undefeated Miami and undefeated Notre Dame would basically only be playing for playoff seeding and not for their playoff lives — and the latter is exactly what Notre Dame is fighting for on Saturday. It means more, but we knew this was THE game in 2026 ever since the Irish lost to Miami to start the 2025 season.
It’s been going on for weeks, but the debate about if a two loss Notre Dame team can make the playoffs is going strong. Regardless of my own personal thoughts, and the fact CFB as a whole has been completely chaotic this season, I refuse to engage with those debates.
Beat Miami.
Beat Miami, and run the table and nothing else matters. The other results don’t matter and some random dude’s opinion doesn’t matter. Beat Miami and the Irish are going to be in the CFB playoff.
This season was always going to be about this game. The different type of stakes have changed, but the spotlight is on and it’s as bright as the sun. Beat Miami and this Notre Dame team will make a run.
