Mike Vrabel and the New England Patriots came up short at Soldier Field as they fell 30-24 to the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football. Kicker Cairo Santos helped ice the game for the Bears with a career-long 58-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to put Chicago up by nine points.

Vrabel has some history with Cairo during their time with the Tennessee Titans. Vrabel, the head coach of the Titans in 2019, cut Cairo after a rough stretch on field goals. Vrabel made a joke referencing that when asked after the game about Santos’ career-long kick to help defeat the Pats.
“I think the last FG Cairo missed was when he kicked for the Titans. I don’t think he’s missed one since then. We always joke about it.”

Vrabel went on to laud Santos for overcoming that setback to build a strong career for himself.
Santos landed in Chicago after getting cut by Vrabel and the Titans, and he has found a home for himself with the Bears. He has been on the team for seven seasons now and has converted nearly 88 percent of his field goals.
Santos came into the Thursday night game struggling a bit, missing two out of his last three field goals. But despite another miss against the Pats, he still came through with a career-best kick to haunt his old coach.
Vrabel, who was also critical of his team’s tackling against the Bears, will look to bounce back when the Pats take on their division rivals, the Miami Dolphins, in Week 8.
