Fox was forced into a broadcasting change for Game 3 of the NLDS between the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night as Kenny Albert took the place of lead play-by-play man Joe Davis.

Davis was scratched from the lineup after losing his voice while being under the weather. But getting Albert into the broadcast booth wasn’t as straightforward as it may seem.

According to Michael McCarthy at Front Office Sports, the call to the bullpen came while Albert was in the middle of prepping for something far different than calling a game on national television — a colonoscopy.

Thankfully for Kenny Albert, he wasn’t too deep in the throes of cleansing his colon to change gears.

The situation was fluid (pun intended) for several hours while Fox and Davis were weighing whether or not he would be able to call Tuesday’s Game 3. It wasn’t until midnight that it was finally confirmed that Albert would call the game. He then flew into Atlanta on Tuesday morning and called the game that evening, delivering his trademark professional performance. That’s in spite of needing some extra help in getting caught up with the series after focusing on his NFL on Fox duties.

“So basically, the whole morning, the whole flight, the whole afternoon, I crammed. I hadn’t seen either of the first two games because it was a football weekend. I was in Dallas. So I had to catch up. Do a lot of reading. Luckily, I had the same exact matchup, same teams, same pitchers, in a regular season game on Aug. 27. So I was able to pull out my stuff for that game. That saved a lot of time. It was very helpful. Everyone on the crew, and John and Joe, couldn’t have been more helpful as far as sharing information and just making sure I got down there,” Albert said when speaking about subbing for Davis.

With Davis still sidelined, Fox went with Brandon Gaudin for Game 4. Thankfully, Gaudin calls Braves games throughout the year locally in Atlanta so his availability and familiarity would be a natural fit. And hopefully he wasn’t preparing for any uncomfortable medical procedures.
