Toronto police have a man in custody following a summer-long child luring investigation.
Members of the Toronto police Internet Child Exploitation Unit began their investigation in June, alleging that the accused maintained communication with the 15-year-old female victim through various online social media applications.
Police allege the accused made inappropriate comments to the victim and sent her images described by police as explicit.
The accused then, police say, began extorting the victim — forcing her to send him explicit images of herself.
Investigators obtained an arrest warrant on Thursday, Sept. 3, but didn’t have to search very long before locating the accused.
Suspect arrested in September
While investigating a completely unrelated matter on Monday, Sept. 7, Toronto police members from 33 Division happened to come across the male wanted in the luring investigation and took him into custody.
Twenty-three-year-old Kayaan Jiwan of Toronto faces numerous charges, including luring a person under the age of 18 by means of telecommunication, luring a person under the age of 16 by means of telecommunication, making sexually explicit material available to a person under the age of 18, exposing genitals to a person under the age of 16, and extortion.
Jiwan appeared in court via videoconference from the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Monday, Sept. 7.
Police are concerned there may be more victims.
