Oroville High School football forfeits remainder of 2026 season

· Yahoo Sports

The Oroville High School football team has forfeited the remainder of its season, the school announced on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The Tigers have fewer than 16 players on the varsity roster, and school officials grew increasingly concerned that such a small roster would increase the risk of injury.

"The decision follows several weeks of careful consideration by school and athletic staff and was made with the safety and well-being of student-athletes as the District’s primary consideration," Oroville High School said in a press release. "The decision was necessitated by a combination of injuries and a significant reduction in the number of available players."

Oroville, a Division III school in the Northern Section, was 0-4 this season after finishing the 2025 season with a 1-9 record. Before that, the Tigers held a 0-38 record between 2021-24.

“We recognize how difficult this decision is, particularly for our seniors who have worked throughout the season and looked forward to completing their final high school football season,” Oroville High School and District leadership said. “This is not a decision that was made lightly. However, our responsibility is first and foremost to protect the health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes. Given the circumstances, we believe this is the appropriate decision for our students.”

The Tigers announced that they would continue playing their junior varsity season. The school will use the remainder of the season and the upcoming offseason to prepare younger players for the varsity level while also focusing on increasing participation.

The decision was made just a few days before Oroville was set to face Anderson High School on Friday, Oct. 2. Anderson will instead face Orland, and the Tigers junior varsity team will next face off against Orland on Oct. 9.
