UCF unveils Mission X Space Game uniforms

It’s become increasingly difficult to establish a new longstanding tradition in college football.

Many of the sport’s newer traditions cease to exist the instant a coaching staff changes. But the UCF Knights created one of the greatest 21st century traditions college football has to offer — the annual Space Game, which started during the Knights’ historic undefeated 2017 season.

Founded as Florida Technical College in 1963 to train scientists and engineers to accompany the rising United States’ space program in Cape Canaveral, UCF fully embraces its outer space roots for this game each year. UCF reverts to its original nickname — the “Citronauts” — and dons wearing space-themed uniforms with intricate details, each one different from the last.

The 10th Space Game will be held Friday, Oct. 30 against Baylor, dubbed “Mission X.”

On Tuesday, Sept. 29, roughly one month prior to launch, UCF unveiled its highly-anticipated Space Game uniforms at the fitting time of 3:21 p.m.

Here is a stillshot of the uniform for Mission X:

For the third time in Space Game history, UCF will wear white jerseys. Five Space Games featured black jerseys and the other two featured Canaveral blue. The Knights will sport an all-white look, from the helmet to the jersey to the pants.

UCF lays out the granular details of the uniform design on its website. Here are the highlights:

Helmet

  • Thick red stripe represents red stripes on spacesuits during Apollo missions
  • Chrome facemask represents Apollo spacesuit visors
  • American flag contained within the UCF emblem

Jersey

  • Stitching is based on Project Mercury spacesuits
  • Number font is Modified Microgramma, which was popular in 1960s science fiction
  • Numbers contain 10 Polaris stars to represent Mission X
  • “Property of Florida Technical University 1963” stitched below the stars on the numbers
  • Jersey cuffs are blue (on the left) and red (on the right side) to mimic the connecting gloves to a Project Gemini spacesuit
  • Canaveral blue collar designed to look like a spacesuit collar from Project Gemini
  • “Space U” patch on the shoulders, designed to pay homage to the Gemini X mission patch

Pants

  • Blue (left leg) and red (right leg) stripes designed to look like Apollo rockets and spacesuits
  • “Mission X” embroidered on the left side of the pants in blue, “United States” on the right side in red
  • Citronaut logo located on the front right hip

UCF will unveil its Space Game uniforms to a public audience at the Bounce House on Friday, Oct. 30 when it hosts Baylor in a Big 12 matchup. This will be the first-ever Space Game against Baylor and the second-straight Space Game slated for a Friday night.

The Citronauts own an 8-1 record in their previous nine Missions, outscoring opponents by a combined margin of 432-189 (average of 48-21).
