It’s been a very long time since I last gave an update on my orchid, Planty.
I now have five plants, actually: Planty, a little palm, two snake plants, and a large majestic palm.
One of the challenges I’ve recently encountered is the sun. My apartment has those floor-to-ceiling windows which look pretty cool on the internet but might be less practical in real life. Take my orchid, for instance.
My home faces east, which means it gets a tonne of sunlight. Too much, apparently, because I noticed there were parts of Planty’s roots that got burnt from all the direct sunlight. This caused a lot of concern, so it’s since been relocated to a safer location. So far, so good. I think it’ll be a few months until I learn if it stands a chance of blooming again next year.
Now, the big problem is my majestic palm. It’s got a couple problems:
- The sunlight. Which is too direct
- The pot, whose drainage system leaves a lot to be desired.
I’ve had to relocate the palm to a place with less intense sunlight, but the leaves also looked pretty dire. I’ve since trimmed half of the stems/leaves on the majestic palm to help it conserve some energy in an effort to preserve the plant. I’ve only had it since June, and I’m concerned it doesn’t have a tonne of time left.
But I hope it still has a chance, just like I hope I was able to relocate Planty in time to prevent it from dying in the intense mid-Atlantic summer sun. We’ll provide an update soon enough once I learn.
