Q: My dad passed away in the spring, and my brother and I have been sorting through his affairs ever since. He had a car loan and a credit card balance that was higher than any of us expected, and we just found out he and my stepmother had a joint credit card none of us knew existed. My brother keeps saying the bank will simply write it off, but my stepmother is terrified she's on the hook for the whole balance. Going through all of this has also made me anxious about my own situation.
