Anthony Knox will not contest state high school wrestling title penalty

Anthony Knox will not appeal the decision by the NJSIAA controversies committee from last May to strip him of the 126-pound state wrestling championship he won in 2025, it was announced Friday by both the NJSIAA and Knox’s attorneys.

The 2025 state title would have been the fourth of Knox’s scholastic career at St. John Vianney High School. He is one of five wrestlers to win four state championships on the mat.
“In the matter of Anthony Knox v. NJSIAA, the Association can confirm that all claims have been dismissed with prejudice. Mr. Knox, through his attorney, has agreed that he will not appeal the procedures, factual findings, or decision of the NJSIAA’s Controversies Committee revoking his title. Accordingly, the NJSIAA’s Committee’s findings and decision stand,’’ the NJSIAA said in a statement.
“The case is over. The case has been dismissed,’’ Knox’s attorney Patrick J. Jennings said.
Jennings declined to comment further.
The title Knox won on March 8, 2025 at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City with an 18-4 major decision over Bergen Catholic’s Nathan Braun will remain vacant. The NJSIAA officially will list Knox as a three-time state champion.
Knox is currently a freshman at Rutgers University and is expected to be the Scarlet Knights’ starting 125-pounder this season.
At the May 26 meeting of the controversies committee, the panel voted 8-0 to strip Knox of the 2025 title. The committee said Knox violated the NJSIAA’s sportsmanship policy and bench rule when he participated in an altercation in the stands at the District 25 Tournament at Collingswood High School on February 22, 2025.
Three days after the district tournament, NJSIAA Executive Director Colleen Maguire disqualified Knox for the remainder of the 2025 postseason for violating the association’s sportsmanship policy and for leaving the bench area during the altercation.
However, on the day of the Region 7 Tournament, Knox, through his attorneys, won an appeal based on the grounds that he did not receive sufficient due process. That allowed Knox to compete in the Region 7 Tournament at Lacey High School and then the NJSIAA Individual Championships.
Knox was eventually charged by the Collingswood with simple assault and purposely/knowingly causing bodily injury by the Collingswood police. His father, Anthony J. Knox was charged with same offenses.
Both Knox and his father reached plea bargain agreements to have the charges reduced on Jan. 28, 2026.
Knox admitted guilt to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct and a one-year probationary term, with his record to be cleared if he completes it successfully.

Knox's debut season at Rutgers approaching
Knox, who signed with Rutgers in early January after he had decommited from Cornell last December, finished third at 57 kg in the U.S. Open and second at 57 kg in the Senior World Trials last spring. He is expected to be a contender for All-American honors this season. Rutgers has not had an All-American the last two seasons and three of the last four.
Rutgers begins its season in early November in a showcase event at Bethelhem, Pennsylvania. Its first home match is Nov. 15 against Lehigh.
