Chasing the Finish Line

CRANE, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) - Crane Native and star athlete Jai Brown has made his name known in the track and field world, dominating the competition. Within the past month Brown has broken three state records while competting at this year Texas Amateur Athletic Federation meet in the 100M, 200M, and Long Jump.

"When he gets into the mode, he goes very quiet, very silent," Mother Rausalyn Brown said. "You can't get no conversation out of him."

It's that focus and killer instinct that has got Brown to where he is today. As for his mother Rausalyn, she was a star athlete herself being a two-time state champion during her time at Crane High School. Father Khaled Brown was an athlete himself, playing college footbal at Waylan Baptist University.

Sticking with the athletic gene within the family, Brown's Great Grandmother Daisy Jeffery was a member of the early 1970s Sul Ross Volleyball national championship team. Jeffery was named to the universities sports hall of fame a few years ago. In addition Jai's uncle, aunts, and grandfather have all competed at the junior olympics.

After blazing through each event, Brown went on to nationals in Iowa, where he would experience a challenge. Although Brown has blown away his oppenents on the track, it was a close call in the 200M race that nearly gave him his first loss.

"I felt nervous because I thought I lost," Brown said.

However just as any champion does, Brown pushed his way through diving for the finish line. As Brown headed to the medical tent to clean up a wound he suffered from the dive, it was there he found out he had won. In addition to winning the 200m, Brown also competed and won in the 100M and Long Jump.

With both the athletic gift and competitive mindset, it is the support that Jai recieves that really motivates him.

"The support is very great," Brown said. "I love that I'm being loved by everyone, even my coach, even my family. I just love that everybody's supporting me."

When it all comes down to how far Brown wants to go with the first, the goal is straight and simple, the olympics.
