'I Hate People Wearing Sabya Head To Toe': Why Indian Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee Doesn't Do 'Custom' Outfits For Celebs

· Free Press Journal

For a designer whose creations have become a familiar sight on red carpets, weddings and celebrity wardrobes, Sabyasachi Mukherjee has a rather unexpected rule: he isn't particularly interested in making something exclusively for every celebrity who comes knocking. In fact, the designer believes that fashion becomes more interesting when the person wearing it brings their own personality to the clothes.

That philosophy was recently at the centre of a conversation around Sabyasachi's approach to celebrity dressing, where he explained why he avoids custom outfits and why he would rather see celebrities make a ready-to-wear piece their own.

Why Sabyasachi doesn't like 'custom' outfits

Speaking during the launch of his new flagship store in Delhi, Sabyasachi explained that his reluctance to create custom red-carpet looks is largely connected to what he believes custom dressing represents.

"One of the reasons I don't dress a lot of celebrities is because I can't be bothered with doing customs because when you are doing something custom, it means the client doesn't have confidence. They want to show this status by showing exclusivity,” he said in an Instagram reel posted by Anannya Sarkar.

For Sabyasachi, true style isn't necessarily about owning something nobody else has. Instead, he believes confidence lies in taking something accessible to others and giving it an unmistakably personal identity.

“A real confident dresser can pick up something from a rack that 500 other people have access to and wear it differently and make it their own,” he said.

That is also why the designer doesn't seem particularly interested in the idea of dressing celebrities from head to toe in specially created pieces. He argued that relying too heavily on exclusivity can sometimes take away from the individuality of the person wearing the clothes.

"If you are going to wear custom, it really means you have no individual style. Which is one of the reasons I don't do a lot of red carpet dressing because everybody wants custom. I said, if my clothes are not good enough for you to wear from the rack, then please don’t wear them,” he added.

Designer's Madonna reference

To explain his point, Sabyasachi turned to one of pop culture's most recognisable fashion figures: Madonna.

He pointed out that Madonna didn't need exclusive couture to build her image. Instead, she famously transformed everyday pieces and rebellious staples, including pantyhose, fishnet stockings and ripped T-shirts, into part of a visual language that became instantly associated with her.

“One doesn’t have to go and get custom clothing. If you’re a real fashion rock star, you can wear Levi’s and H&M and still make it,” he said.

The designer's philosophy extends beyond customisation. Sabyasachi has also spoken against the idea of celebrities wearing his label completely from head to toe. In a Diet Sabya video, he bluntly said, "I hate people wearing Sabya head to toe."

For him, a strong fashion identity comes from mixing pieces, adding unexpected elements and allowing the wearer, not the label, to remain the focus.
