Heads of state and government will gather at the Durban International Convention Centre for the summit on Monday.

Which Durban roads will be affected?

Police said officers will enforce hard closures at intersections along routes that heads of state and other dignitaries use.

The closures could stop traffic at short notice as official convoys move through Durban.

Authorities urged motorists to follow instructions from officers and allow extra time to reach their destinations.

The restrictions started on Sunday and will continue on Monday.

Officials have also closed Walnut Road between Bram Fischer Road and Dr AB Xuma Street near the Durban ICC. That closure will remain in place until Tuesday, 18 August.

Busy Monday expected in Durban

The SADC summit will bring regional leaders together as South Africa assumes the chairship of the regional bloc.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will host the gathering.

Police also warned football supporters travelling to Kings Park Stadium to leave home early because the security operation could delay traffic.

Authorities have urged motorists to avoid affected areas where possible and use alternative routes.

The summit will take place throughout Monday, with a press conference scheduled after the closing proceedings.
