According to the FIR, the 48-year-old accounts manager of a Mumbai-based private company was allegedly duped of Rs 1.98 crore in a WhatsApp impersonation scam after fraudsters posed as the company's director and instructed him to make an urgent fund transfer.

The 48-year-old resident of Kurla (West) has been working as the General Manager – Accounts & Banking Administrator at Oriental Foundry Pvt. Ltd., Grant Road, for the past 28 years.

As part of his responsibilities, he manages the company's banking transactions and reports directly to the company's director, Saleh N. Mithiborwala.

Fraudster Posed As Director

On August 4, the complainant received a WhatsApp message from mobile number +91 8505998637 stating, "Dear Accounts Department, Please note that this is my new contact number. Kindly update your records accordingly. Regards, SALEH N. MITHIBORWALA."

Since the WhatsApp profile displayed the director's photograph, the complainant believed the message had been sent by his employer. The following day, the same number sent another message claiming that an urgent client payment of Rs 1.98 crore needed to be processed immediately and shared the beneficiary account details of Rajput Enterprises Maltipal, maintained with a bank account at the Berasai Branch.

Believing the instructions to be genuine, the complainant transferred Rs 1,98,00,000 from the company's ICICI Bank current account to the beneficiary account.

Complaint Filed

Shortly afterwards, the real director contacted him over the phone and enquired about the debit transaction, following which the complainant realised that he had been deceived by an unknown fraudster who had impersonated the director using his name and profile photograph.
