Joe Gilbert and Carolina Panthers set for NFL Preseason

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – NFL football is back for Horseheads’ Joe Gilbert Thursday night.

Visit playerbros.org for more information.

Gilbert, in his third season as the offensive line coach for the Carolina Panthers, returns to help the franchise start off the season right. Thursday, Carolina plays the Arizona Cardinals in the Pro Football Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio. Kickoff is set for 8 PM as part of Hall of Fame enshrinement weekend.

Just weeks ago, Gilbert was our honored guest instructor at the Coach Mike D’Aloisio Memorial Lineman Camp with Hornell’s Mike Waufle, who like Joe, won a Super Bowl in the NFL. Both joined University of Alabama Life Football Coach Gary Cramer, a six-time NCAA Champion, to help the future of the game at Horseheads High School in early July.

Gilbert, who won a Super Bowl in the 2020 season as the line coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is thrilled to be back on the field for the upcoming year in Carolina. Joe has nearly 20 years of NFL coaching experience and started in the league back in 2012 with the Indianapolis Colts. Gilbert says there’s nothing like getting back after it in the game.

“But, it’s all good,” Gilbert said. “You get your time off then you get that itch to get back, this gives me a little itch and you can’t wait to get back on the field with the guys and all of that.”

In between the lineman camp in Horseheads and the start of NFL training camp, Gilbert discussed the importance of making the most of your time off.

“You enjoy your time with your family and connect with all of them, Dave (Canales) our head coach is big on that,” Gilbert said. “We reconnect with the players and they come back on from the offseason, now it’s our time to kind of reconnect with our families before hopefully we’re at it for nine months. That’s what the hope is (in the NFL),” added Gilbert.

Last season, the Panthers finished (8-9) overall but did capture the NFC South Division Championship. Carolina lost to the LA Rams 34-31 in the NFC Wildcard round ending their year. After Thursday’s Hall of Fame game, Carolina travels to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, August 15 at 1 PM for the second preseason game at Highmark Stadium.

The 2026 regular season for Gilbert and the Panthers begins on Sunday, September 13 when they host the Chicago Bears at 1 PM on FOX. Stay with 18 Sports as we again follow Gilbert’s progress in the NFL this season.
