The Washington Commanders are preparing for the upcoming season with hopes of building on last year's success. Led by quarterback Jayden Daniels, the offense is expected to take another step forward in 2026.
Washington knew it needed to address its wide receiver room during the offseason. On Wednesday, the Commanders did exactly that by agreeing to a deal with veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
“Free agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs is set to sign a one-year deal worth up to $12 million with the Washington Commanders, giving the team a proven receiver opposite Terry McLaurin, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and ESPN's Adam Schefter,” ESPN’s John Keim wrote.
The addition of Diggs gives Washington's receiving corps a significant boost after entering training camp with questions behind McLaurin. If Diggs can return to the form he showed before his injury, he should immediately solidify the Commanders' No. 2 receiver spot.
“Diggs present a much-needed upgrade to the Commanders' passing attack heading into the 2026 season. Veteran Terry McLaurin was the lone proven commodity among Washington's wide receivers prior to the move to sign Diggs. Outside of "Scary Terry," the Commanders were poised to start third-round rookie Antonio Williams and one of Luke McCaffrey, Treylon Burks, Dyami Brown or Jaylin Lane on offense,” USA Today’s Jack McKessy wrote.
At one point, it appeared Washington could pursue Brandon Aiyuk to fill that role. Instead, the organization pivoted to Diggs, beating out several other interested teams for the four-time Pro Bowler.
“The Chiefs, Dolphins and Raiders were also interested in Stefon Diggs before he signed with the Commanders, per Adam Schefter. Washington pivoted away from pursuing Brandon Aiyuk due to his recent viral moments on social media,” reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
Diggs has enjoyed tremendous success throughout his career, and pairing him with Terry McLaurin gives Washington one of the more talented wide receiver duos in the NFC. If he stays healthy, this signing could prove to be a better fit for the Commanders than a trade for Aiyuk would have been.
Diggs has earned $157 million in career contracts. Washington is bringing him in on a one-year deal, giving both sides the flexibility to evaluate the partnership before making any long-term commitment next offseason.
