Oregon among finalists for elite 2028 recruit, sets commitment date

The 2028 recruiting cycle is in full swing, and one of the Oregon Ducks' top targets is about to come off the board.

Four-star edge rusher Darieon Prescott announced he will be committing on July 27, with the Ducks being one of three finalists alongside Notre Dame and Texas A&M. Prescott, from Brookington, Illinois, is ranked as the No. 18 overall player and No. 5 edge rusher in the 2028 class, per the Rivals Industry Ranking.

As of now, Prescott is considered to be leaning toward Notre Dame. He did visit Eugene and College Station in early June, where both programs made a big impression. However, a mid-June trip to South Bend has swung momentum in favor of the Irish. Notre Dame is also close to home for Prescott. He went to two games in South Bend last season and attended a spring practice. Clearly, there is a strong connection with the Irish and coach Marcus Freeman.

The Ducks would love to add another feisty pass rusher to an already elite group in Eugene. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound edge rusher racked up 65 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, five sacks, eight pass breakups and 26 pressures last season. He also forced three fumbles. Prescott uses his size and quickness to wreak havoc in the backfield, and the Ducks have had a keen eye for such talents in recent years.

With Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti likely out of the picture next year, the Ducks will have new starters on the edge. Nasir Wyatt, Tank Jones and Elijah Rushing will compete to earn those spots, and Prescott would be a great addition to develop into a starter in the class that follows.

Prescott is expected to announce his decision live on ESPN. The Ducks will have a hat on the table, but the odds might be stacked against them right now. Either way, it is still early in the 2028 recruiting process. Expect the Ducks to continue to push hard, regardless of the commitment.
