The Grizzlies drafted Morant at No. 2 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, and he quickly became the face of the franchise. He was named second-team All-NBA in 2022 and was a two-time All-Star, leading the Grizzlies to the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference in both 2022 and 2023.
But Morant struggled on and off the court the past few years, and he played only 20 games in the 2025-26 season. He got injured during a loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Jan. 21 and didn't play for the team again.
"Ja Morant helped shape one of the exciting eras in Memphis basketball," Memphis Mayor Paul Young said in a statement. "His talent, competitiveness and connection with Grizzlies fans created unforgettable moments and brought national attention to our city. We thank Ja for his contributions to Memphis and wish him success in the next chapter of his career."
