In what has to be a first in my recollection, Purdue signed a player in the 2026 class who will not actually enroll at Purdue until 2028. Jamyn Sondrup, a 6’9” power forward from Utah signed with the Boilermakers with the understanding that he would complete a two year mission trip before officially enrolling with the Boilermakers. That means that when Sondrup comes to Purdue for his first season with the Boilermakers, the 2028-2029 men’s basketball season, he will be 20 years old. That could be a great advantage for the Boilermakers.

Sondrup was ranked in the top 150 by the major recruiting services and was 134 at 247. During his senior season he averaged 17.8 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. He was highly sought after by Utah and BYU especially. It is a bit surprising to get a kid like him out of the state of Utah given the well funded pockets of both Utah but especially BYU.

It’s difficult to look too far ahead into the future as we don’t know what the makeup of the team will be in two years, but it seems clear that Sondrup will have the opportunity to carve out a place on the team. He’s got great size and skill and, depending on what his body does over the next two years, he could find himself in a great position at the 4 spot for Matt Painter’s Boilermakers.

Until those two years go by though there isn’t much to say other than I hope wherever he completes his mission trip he’s got 24/7 access to a basketball hoop and some competition to play against. We don’t want him getting rusty.
